January may be touted as the beginning of the new year but for the fashion set, September is the month that brings around that “fresh start” energy. You can thank New York Fashion Week for that. There’s something about seeing the spring and summer collections hit the runway, timed with the transition to “back to school” season that makes us want to reinvent ourselves and try out something new. Though it’ll be a while before we can actually wear the clothes and accessories from the Spring/Summer 2024 season, you don’t have to wait until spring to recreate the accompanying beauty looks. From bold eye color to balletcore-inspired hair accessories, this season gave us a number of refreshing beauty trends. Ahead, we've rounded up New York Fashion Week’s biggest Spring/Summer 2024 beauty trends—enjoy.
Mermaid Waves
Sculpted, wet waves were prolific on the runway this season. For Jason Wu’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, lead hairstylist Jimmy Paul wanted to create a look “that felt like the models just emerged from a shipwreck” and used Tresemmé products, like the Keratin Smooth Shine Serum and the Mega Control Hair Gel, to “achieve a wet, nearly drenched appearance without sacrificing the fluid movement of the natural hair texture.” At Sandy Liang, lead hairstylist Marin Mullen used Bread Hair Oil on models to create a sleek and wet look.
Low-Effort Updos
Lazy girl hair was also in full-effect this fashion week. At Altuzarra, lead hairstylist Jawara opted for effortless hair that exuded ease like braids and undone knots. For the Khaite Spring/Summer 2024 show, Guido Palau went for more natural hairstyles that would compliment the “natural downtown feel” of the collection. Jawara also drew inspiration from the collection when creating the clean 90s knots for Peter Do’s first Helmut Lang collection.
Shimmery Eyes
At Christian Siriano, the Charlotte Tilbury Pro-Artistry team used a combination of the brand’s Magic Water Cream and Hollywood Flawless Filter to create a luminous base, before applying Luxury Palette in Uptown Girl across models’ lids for a glimmering finish. For the Sandy Liang show, Jocelyn Biga, Estée Lauder’s Director of Global Pro Artistry applied a light layer of Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturizing Foundation before randomly placing barnacle rhinestones across the eye area.
Flushed Lips
Amy Conway, Bobbi Brown Global Pro Artist, applied a subtle stain of color onto models for a rosy look that complemented the Victorian-inspired Love Shack Fancy Spring/Summer 2024 collection. At Dion Lee, makeup lead Marcelo Gutierrez applied the Kjaer Weis Lip Pencil in Soft onto the pouts of some models before dabbing on a nude lipstick. For Tibi’s Spring/Summer 2024 show, Bobbi Brown Global Pro Artist, Cassandra Garcia “created a lived-in 90s look with warmth and color to balance the cool tones” of the clothes. To create a soft, diffused stain like the one seen in the show, press Luxe Matte Lipstick in Ruby onto your lips with your fingers.
Accessorized Hair Strands
Crystals, pearls, ribbons, and fabric adorned the hair of models across a number of shows. Inspired by Truman Capote’s Swans, lead hair stylist Matthew Curtis and Sola Salons Hair Professionals added crystals and ribbons to the hair looks at Alice & Olivia before finishing off the look with a blast of Living Proof Hairspray. At Dauphinette’s show, Oribe Principal Artist of Global Content, Mandee Tauber added crystals onto a few hair looks to evoke a heavenly vibe before setting the style with Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray.
Ribbons and bows were also spotted at Sandy Liang and Christian Siriano. To complete the balletcore aesthetic at Siriano, lead hairstylist Lacy Redway applied Tresemmé Ultra Fine Hairspray to add grip to the hair before using a bobby pin to secure a ribbon to the hair. On Collina Strada’s runway, Evanie Frausto, Bumble and Bumble Global Artistic Ambassador, integrated Collina Strada fabrics into the hair and finished off with Sumo Liquid Wax + Finishing Spray to add pieciness to the overall hair look.Chrome Nails
“The inspiration for the nails this season is the classic ballet slipper,” said Leanne Woodley, the lead nail artist for the Mirror Palais Spring/Summer 2024 show. After using CND Shellac polish to paint nails in pink and champagne shades, a chrome finish was added to “elevate the nail look.” At Prabal Gurung, to complement the collection, celebrity nail artist Gina Edwards applied nude press-on nails from Kiss before using chrome pigment to create metallic gold and silver tips.
Eye-Catching Pop of Color
Bright swatches of color dotted Mansur Gavriel’s show/block party this season. Kanako Takase, Global Creative Director for Addiction Tokyo, used The Eyeshadow Matte in a number of shades to complement the color palette of the clothes. And at Prabal Gurung, key makeup artist Sil Bruinsma swiped on colorful shadow before topping lids off with Clear Lip Glass. Daniel Sallstrom used MAC’s Acrylic Paint and Chromaline Cream Liner to create sharp, straight wings on models for Peter Do’s Helmut Lang collection.
