Their stellar accomplishments have only bought honor to the country and have held India’s flag high. In short, it’s achievements galore for our dear women.

These women haven’t got it all easy, they’ve fought a battle to break all the gender barriers, and they’ve spoken against the regressive norms of the society they’re conformed to. Meet Gita Gopinath, the first ever woman, and the second Indian to be appointed as the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The economic crisis that India faced in 1991 ignited the fire in Gita, a daughter to a farmer-entrepreneur from Kannur, Kerala, to pursue a career in economics, and eventually became a known figure in the world of international finance.

Arunima was a national level volley player before the “darkest hour” of her life struck her. She was thrown out of a moving train by goons for refusing to give up her gold chain on their demand. This incident cost Arunima her leg. Fed up of the sympathy that surrounded her, she decided to climb the Mount Everest. She is the world’s first female amputee to achieve summit the Everest, in 2013.

When you think of wildlife conservation and its research, you’d probably think that it’s a male dominant field, but the early nineties witnessed an Indian woman step into this field and spread her aura. Latika opted to study India’s national animal, the Tiger when she applied for a doctorate in conservative biology at Wildlife Institute of India. Her extensive study about the majestic cat gave her the title of “India’s Tiger Princess.” She is an inspiration for many wildlife experts worldwide.

4. Bhakti Sharma

This teen has a whole set of world records accredited to her name. In the year 2010, she became the youngest and the second person to swim across all the four oceans of the world. She didn’t just stop there, in the year 2015, she became the first Asian and the youngest person to swim across the freezing Antarctic Ocean. She took 41.14 minutes to swim 2.28 km. This open water swimmer is only going to reach further heights, we’re sure!

5. Nishtha Dudeja

Nishtha became the first Indian woman to win the title of Miss Deaf Asia in 2018. We’re sure most of us aren’t even aware that a pageant like this exists, do we? This beauty queen is a notable lawn tennis player as well. She has played for several Asian tennis tournaments. She even participated in Deaflympics in 2013 and 2017. She is setting examples for all the physically disabled souls out there. She is truly an inspiration!

6. Hima Das

She has lived an awe-inspiring story in the athletics history for the country. From being a paddy farmer’s daughter from a small village in Assam, Hima to becoming the first Indian Athlete to win gold on the track, she has proved that determination and willpower will take you places. She won a gold medal in 400m in the U-20 World Championships.

In the world of chefs, we know how important a place the Michelin star holds, right? Garima became the first Indian woman to be bestowed with this prestigious star, the Michelin star! She was very recently also named as the best female chef of Asia, in early 2019. This journalist-turned chef owns an Indian-Thai restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand.

8. Mary Kom

Mary Kom became the first Indian woman to win us a medal in Olympics for boxing. A mother of three children, she also became the first Indian woman to win gold at the Asian Games. She showed what true dedication is when she lost 2 kilos in just four hours because she was told she was overweight for the 13th Silesian Open Boxing Tournament held in Poland.

9. Deepa Malik

Deepa became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics for shot put. Her story cannot be considered as just another inspirational story, for her story is incredible. She was diagnosed with a spinal tumor in 1999, because of which she underwent 3 spinal surgeries. Her love for biking marked her motoring journeys in the Lima Book of Records as well. She even has a Lima record for swimming for a 1km stretch in the Yamuna River against the current.
