From Aimee Mullins and Marrisa Mayer to Smriti Irani and Nita Ambani, we have heard of their unique qualities and their outstanding achievements. They all serve as an inspiration to the younger generation. They prove it to the young lads that dreams, no matter how big and challenging they look, can be achieved with sheer hard work and perseverance. It also makes them a better person at the end of the day.
We, like always, are on the lookout for stories about women who’ve served as an inspiration for other women. We stumbled upon this story of a beautiful woman (no, she isn’t any celebrity). But she is a popular figure in the southern part of India. With an interesting background of Bengali origin, this Bengali beauty is based out of Hyderabad. Her name is Smita Sabharwal. She’s 41 years of age and has become the first ever IAS lady officer in the country to be appointed in the Chief Minister’s office.
About Smita Sabhrwal
Smita currently holds the reigns if Additional Secretary to Chief Minister of Telangana. She’s become a role model for several thousands of girls out there in India who aspire to become an IAS officer. Several newspapers have described her as suave, young, efficient, and an articulate officer.
She is an IAS officer of the 2001 Cadre. She has not just cleared the very challenging UPSC exams at a very young age, but she managed to make it to the 4th rank position in the country. Smita who is basically from Darjeeling but a Bengali by birth has done her schooling in most parts of the country owing to her Army background. Colonel P. K. Das, her father, served in the Indian Army and then settled in Hyderabad. Therefore, Smita completed her pre-university education and graduation in Hyderabad itself.
A Dedicated Student
We all know how tough it is to crack the UPSC exams, many keep trying for years to be able to just get a decent score in these exams. So, when Smita was asked about how she used to prepare herself to write these exams, Smita says, “I used to study only for six hours a day and play for at least an hour. It is wrong to think that one can get through civics only by studying very hard. In the final round, your interest and hobbies are also taken into account for selections.” This shows that Smita focused on being an overall performer, more like an all-rounder which we think is the need of the hour for every budding talented kid out there.
Smita credits her father for her rank in the exam, she says that it was he who initiated her and encouraged her to do it.
And you wouldn’t believe if we told that she got to know about her result from the All India Radio office and not by her teachers or parents. She recalls saying, “On the result day, I was waiting for a call from my training institute to inform me of my result. It was not until 3 pm that I got a call from the All India Radio office who congratulated me for securing 4th rank. I thought it was a prank call and did not pay much heed to it. But finally, when the same was confirmed from my institute, it was just unbelievable as I felt I had performed badly in the last round.”
She had picked anthropology and public administration as the optional subjects for her UPSC exam. She credits her coaching center for her success as well.
And if you thought this was the only examination where she topped, you’re wrong! Smita has already made her parents proud by topping the ICSE 12th board exams.
Smita’s Postings And Services
Since Smita was accustomed to traveling since she was a young girl, thanks to her father’s postings. She already knew about the various kinds of peoples and their cultures from different regions. This made it easier for Smita to be a people’s woman wherever she has got appointed till date.
Her initial posting was done in Chitoor, where she served as the Subcollector, Madanpalle and she was groomed well there. She got a hands-on experience there. She’s also worked as a Municipal Commissioner at Warangal. She then served as Deputy Commissioner, Commercial Taxes, Visakhapatnam, and then as Join Collector of Kurnool and Hyderabad.
A Peek Into Her Personal Life
Her bond with civil services was such that she married an IPS officer, Akun Sabharwal, who was also her batchmate. He is not the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Central Zone in Hyderabad. The couple has two children — Nanak and Bhuvis.
Smita is a much-loved youth icon today, especially for women. She has nearly 14 years of experience and she just cannot stand corruption, illegal activities, and irresponsible officers. We need more officers like her, don’t we?
