Happy New Year Lovecats!
Okay, yes, I’m a little late, about 7 days too late for this, but here it is anyway
Firstly, I hope YOU had a wonderful NYE and have had a great start to your new year.
My new year still somehow feels like the old year and like every day just blurs into the next, but I assure you (more to me than you), I have plans for changing that and they have nothing to do with resolutions.
Alright, on with it… we had a roaring 20s NYE party at Dogwood Tavern on the eve of 2020, which was the perfect way to ring in the New Year and a fabulous excuse to dress up! Any excuse to dress up and I am there. In fact, I’d like to plan more themed parties at Dogwood this year for that purpose alone, but roaring 20s always makes a great NYE statement, no matter the actual year. So there’s that.
I had about 5 dresses hanging in my close that I could have worn and I narrowed it down to two. One short boxy little black dress with a feathered hem (which I bought as an option to wear to the People’s Choice awards a few years back and never wore) and a vintage beaded 20s dress (which was really going to beat all of them out). And then I wondered how I’d stay warm in 23degree weather… and then I wondered what shoes would I wear considering my ankle will not support heels for an entire night, let alone one hour. So I put my thinking cap on (basically I went to Pinterest) and then it dawned on me that I may as well just go as a man and wear a suit, which solved all of my problems in one.
And so that’s what I did…
Also, and you probably know this already, but I am currently (or should I say STILL) obsessed with Peaky Blinders, and so Tommy Shelby became my muse, yet again, and it was pretty easy to pull this look together. I also already had everything in my closet ready to wear, except I couldn’t find my black tie, which I had previously lent to the man a few weeks prior for a different engagement and since has disappeared. So he lent me one of his ties, which I liked even better. I did, however, have to de-feather my DIY Feather Vest (circa 2009), which is fine because I haven’t worn it with feathers anyway. But other than that, my look was a cinch. I grabbed this vintage grey blazer, these newer cropped pants, added a crisp white button down (similar to this but mine is by Rachel Zoe and a few years old) and pinned on a gucci chain necklace to look like a watch chain.
I even did a simple faux bob on my hair (with fewer curls than my original DIY hair tutorial – but a few longer ones on one side), which stayed in place pretty perfectly all night… even though I touched and checked it about every 5 minutes, it was there to stay… and topped it with my now nearly vintage newsboy cap to complete the look.
Though it would have been fun to go in full 20s flapper style, I have to say that I was warm and comfy in my faux fur lined docs (which are my new favorite shoes of the moment) all night long.
I shared the best dressed and best photos on Dogwood’s Instagram but thought I’d share more personal photos here… unfortunately most of them are dimly lit, grainy and/or blurry, but you get the point And I’d like to think it adds to the 1920s vibe of the night.
Cheers to 2020! May it really be the best year yet!
…Here’s Hoping!
