This Tricky Jean Style Is Back for Fall

Denim: a staple in any girl’s closet, regardless of the season. The one thing that does change, though, is the style of denim. Straight-leg, skinny, high-rise, culottes—the silhouettes fluctuate with both trends, personalities, and body type. Strictly speaking, in terms of trends from recent seasons, the runway has proved that a wide leg is the silhouette of the moment. What started as the Celine Rive-Gauche look has evolved into oversize shapes at Balenciaga and polished flares at Nili Lotan.

Today’s rendition typically has a straight-leg oversize shape that grazes (or puddles upon) the floor. The best thing about the style is that the fit shouldn’t be too snug, which is opportune for our newfound regard for comfort. A relaxed fit offers reprieve from constricting slim-leg styles that have been en vogue the past few seasons.

The style itself is reminiscent of a ’60s/’70s silhouette, but to keep the ensemble looking modern and fresh, the styling should steer clear of Woodstock-era pairings—avoid frilly, bohemian blouses. Think more masculine shapes, such as an oversize tee or a tailored jacket, to provide more contrast.
