Clogs Are the Latest “Ugly Shoe” to Herald Trend Status

Fashion is no stranger to an “ugly" shoe trend. In fact, the industry's forte is redefining the connotation around items previously deemed unattractive—just ask Miuccia Prada and her “ugly chic" philosophy. With regard to footwear, the ever-hungry cycle of trends has passed from the chunky sneaker to the dad sandal and come to rest on the wooden clog for 2021.

After the clog's previous escapades at Gucci and Jacquemus, Hermès—the harbinger of luxury status symbols—stamped the clunky shoe with their elevated seal of approval in their spring 2021 collection. For the following fall season, we have already seen the likes of the “ugly shoe" at many institutions. Victor Glemaud debuted a suede option complete with a slingback and fur trim. Catherine Holstein of Khaite cleaned up the silhouette in a monochromatic black-and-white colorway contrasted with gold studs. PH5's Wei Lin and Zoe disregarded the traditional shape and went for an otherworldly, supersized silhouette.

Apparently, the public is catching on to the trend, as well. According to shopping platform Lyst, “searches have increased 124 percent compared to the same time last year." More specifically, those for the “wooden" variety are most popular—up 65 percent month-on-month. While exciting in theory, the prospect of actually donning these subversive shoes is intimidating. So we've rounded up street-style inspiration along with our favorite styles for you to shop now.
